HOW TO CREATE POSTCARDS THAT SELL

A little forward planning will go a long way to getting great results from marketing postcards.

Think about:

Design

Is your design effectively using colour and font selection to highlight your message? Do you have relevant and appealing images? Are your logo and contact details easily identified? Do you need professional assistance with design and/or copy to get the best result from your postcard?

Size

Will it be mailed, distributed face to face, or on display? Are there any size/shape limitations? For example, is it to be included in a package of other promotional print products? What is your mailing budget (do you need to keep within maximum standard post size of 130 x 240mm?). How much information do you need to include?

Card stock/finish

Most postcards are printed on card weights between 300 and 350gsm. Take care if using thinner stocks – they risk being perceived as flimsy and lacking in quality.Consider whether specialty finishing (such as cellosheen or spot UV) will add to the impression of quality or more effectively highlight the message.

Mailing

Check on your production lead time if you’re mailing your postcard. This will vary according to the mailing process used. And remember to allow space for the postage paid square and address on the reverse of your card when planning your content. Australia Post has guidelines for acceptable layouts.

Quantity

Will it be mailed to a specific list, or used for other purposes? Is there an advantage in having multiple versions with slight variations in the message? Will you get value from a large print run, or would it be better to print a small run first and test?

Don’t just use your postcards to share your logo and contact details. Use all the available real estate creatively, because there’s a promotional opportunity on every postcard. Give the reader a good reason to contact you and your business again.
